What to Do When You Don’t Have Enough Willpower

I am Gretchen Spetz, registered and licensed dietitian and creator the Rebirth Weight- Loss method. I am honored to be able to share my passion for nutrition with you.

From age 17 to my early 30s, I was obsessed with losing 20 lbs. Why? At 4’11” my BMI was 24.6—right at the upper end of the “normal” range. As an overachiever, I internalized well-meaning comments from family, friends, and doctors that I “could stand to lose a few.”

I became the poster child for “calories in < calories out” (until the hunger made it impossible to stick with it and I raided the pantry). After this wasn’t enough, I ran marathons—not just because I loved the challenge, but because I thought it would be a guaranteed way to lose weight.

Spoiler alert: It wasn’t.

My perspective didn’t truly shift until my health took a nosedive in my 30s after having two babies. That’s when I realized how overexercising and undernourishing were impacting my body.

I realized nutrition was the key & developed a framework that helped me break free from the cycle, and I was able to sustain my body’s “happy weight.”

Here’s the truth: Your cravings have little to do with willpower & everything to do with balancing blood sugar, getting the right nutrients, and activating satiety hormones.
